Blending

Create custom blends and explore 250+ preset blends across roastery styles, café styles, and world traditions. Filter by brew method, personality type, or your current inventory — or let From My Stock build a blend from the coffees you already have.

Why Blending?

Blending takes your roasting to the next level of complexity. Once you start combining different origins and roast levels, you discover how all those individual flavors interact to create something entirely new. Dialing in the perfect espresso blend where a punchy natural Ethiopian adds fruit-forward brightness to a chocolatey Brazilian base. Building a smooth, balanced daily driver that just works every morning. Crafting a cold brew blend with low acidity and deep sweetness that's incredible over ice.

Or getting experimental — recreating a traditional Turkish-style blend, trying an Indian Monsoon Malabar mixed with a Rwandan honey process, or exploring flavor combinations popular in parts of the world you've never visited. Blending turns roasting from a single-origin pursuit into an endless creative playground, and keeping track of what ratios worked (and what didn't) becomes just as important as tracking the roasts themselves.

Mode Availability

Journey and Science modes include the Blending module. Craft mode focuses on the core roast-and-taste workflow and does not show Blending by default. Craft users can preview it by tapping the “Discover more features” card on the main menu, or switch to Journey mode in Settings at any time — your data carries across every mode.

Overview

The Blending module is where creativity meets data. Build your own blends by selecting component beans from your inventory and dialing in percentages, or explore a curated library of 250+ preset blends organized by brew method, style, and origin tradition.

The From My Stock tab and the "My Inventory Only" filter are the most useful starting points — From My Stock suggests blends built only from coffees you have, and the filter shows which presets you can make right now. Personality-based recommendations from the Java Geek quiz add another layer of discovery.

Workflows

1 Learning Blending Basics

  1. Open the Blending Fundamentals panel at the top of the module.
  2. Learn the difference between post-roast blending (recommended) and pre-blend/mélange roasting.
  3. Follow the 4-step post-roast workflow: roast each component separately, cool, weigh percentages, rest the blend.
  4. Understand when mélange roasting works — similar density, size, and target roast level (e.g., two washed Central Americans).

Things to Consider

Post-roast blending is recommended because different origins have different densities, moisture levels, and optimal roast points. Roasting separately lets you optimize each component and re-roast just one if it doesn’t turn out. Rest the finished blend 3-5 days for filter, 5-7 days for espresso — flavors meld during this time.

2 Your First Blend

  1. If you have no blends yet, follow the "Your First Blend" 5-step walkthrough in the My Blends empty state.
  2. Start with 2 components: a base bean (60%) and an accent (40%).
  3. Roast each component separately to its ideal level.
  4. Mix after cooling and rest 3-5 days for filter, 5-7 for espresso.
  5. Taste and adjust ratios in 5-10% increments.

Things to Consider

Keep your first blend simple — 2-3 components is much easier to dial in than 4+. A common approach: a body-forward base (Brazilian, Sumatran) combined with a bright accent (Ethiopian, Kenyan). Track your ratios so you can replicate successes.

3 Creating a Custom Blend

  1. Tap Create Blend in the Blending module.
  2. Name your blend and select a target brew method (espresso, pour over, cold brew, etc.).
  3. Add component beans from your inventory or the full bean database.
  4. Set percentages for each component — they must total exactly 100%.
  5. Review the predicted blend profile — RoastSource predicts what the blend will taste like from its components, so you can adjust ratios before you roast.
  6. Set a target flavor profile (optional but helpful for tracking goals).
  7. Tap Save to add the blend to My Blends.

Things to Consider

Component percentages must total exactly 100%. Start with 2-3 components — more complex blends with 4+ components are significantly harder to dial in. A common starting approach is a base bean (50-60%), a complement (25-35%), and an accent (10-20%). Keep notes on what works.

4 Exploring Preset Blends

  1. Browse categories: Espresso, Cold Brew, Low Acid, and more.
  2. Toggle the "My Inventory Only" filter to see only blends you can make with beans you currently have.
  3. Tap any blend to view its flavor preview and component breakdown.
  4. Save a preset as your own to customize percentages or swap components.

Things to Consider

Over 250 preset blends are available across all categories. The My Inventory Only filter prevents the frustration of finding an exciting blend only to discover you do not have the beans. Saving a preset as your own creates an editable copy — the original preset remains unchanged.

5 Exploring World Blends

  1. Browse the World Blends category to discover regional blending traditions from around the globe.
  2. Learn about traditional blending approaches — how different cultures combine coffees.
  3. Discover classic flavor combinations rooted in regional preferences.
  4. Save favorites to try with your own inventory.

Things to Consider

World Blends showcase how different coffee cultures approach blending — from Italian espresso traditions to Turkish coffee blends. These recipes provide a foundation you can adapt to your own taste preferences.

6 Using Roastery Styles and Café Styles

  1. Browse the Roastery Styles and Café Styles tabs.
  2. Explore blend formulas built around regional roastery and café style traditions.
  3. Toggle the My Inventory Only filter to find ones you can make now.
  4. Save as your own to customize for your beans and taste.

Things to Consider

These are generic style archetypes — descriptive profiles of regional roasting and café traditions, not recipes from or endorsements of any specific commercial roaster or café. They are excellent for learning how professionals balance components for consistency and flavor complexity. Use them as starting points and adjust to your preference.

7 Blending by Personality

  1. Open the By Personality category.
  2. Find your coffee personality type (determined by the "Find Your Type" quiz in Java Geek).
  3. Browse 14 tailored blend recommendations per personality type.
  4. Try the blends that match your taste preferences.

Things to Consider

For best results, take the "Find Your Type" quiz in the Java Geek module first. Your personality type reflects your flavor preferences — fruity and bright, earthy and bold, balanced and smooth, etc. The 14 recommendations per type cover a range of brew methods and styles.

8 Filtering by Brew Method

  1. Open the By Brew Method category.
  2. See blend recommendations tailored to specific brewing methods.
  3. Compare how espresso blends differ from pour over or cold brew blends.
  4. Match your blending to your preferred brewing style.

Things to Consider

Different brewing methods extract coffee differently, so optimal blend composition varies significantly. Espresso blends often include more body-forward components. Cold brew blends lean toward chocolatey and low-acid profiles. Pour over blends highlight origin clarity.

9 Building a Blend From My Stock

  1. Open the From My Stock tab (Journey and Science modes).
  2. Pick a brew method and get up to three blend ideas made only from coffees you have on hand, each with percentages and a suggested roast level.
  3. Tap Edit this mix to change a suggestion, or build your own from the What you have list.
  4. Tap Use this blend to open it in the blend builder and save it.

Things to Consider

Finished a bag? Tap Used up on that coffee so it stops appearing in suggestions — you can undo it later.

10 Managing Custom Blends

  1. Go to My Blends to see all your custom and saved blends.
  2. Edit component percentages or swap beans in any blend.
  3. Save as new version before changing a ratio, so the original recipe is kept and you can compare (Home).
  4. Delete blends you no longer use to keep things organized.

Things to Consider

Save a new version before making major changes so you can compare the original with the variation. The free plan holds two blend recipes; Home removes the limit and adds versions. Keep notes on what worked and what did not. Over time, your My Blends collection becomes a personal recipe book.

Tips & Best Practices

  • • Roast each component separately for best results — different origins need different heat curves.
  • • Rest your finished blend 3-5 days for filter, 5-7 days for espresso — flavors meld during this time.
  • • Start simple: 2-3 components is much easier to dial in than 4+.
  • • Not sure where to start? Open From My Stock, pick a brew method, and try one of its suggestions.
