New here? Start in Craft mode

Craft is the simplest way in — you roast by sight, sound, and smell, and the app keeps notes for you. Pick Craft in the welcome questions (or Settings > Display Mode), then:

  1. Quick Roast — open Roasting, pick a coffee, and tap the buttons as it dries, cracks, and drops. Weigh the beans after to see how dark you went.
  2. Tasting — your roast waits in “Resting” and moves to “Ready” when it's time to taste. Give it stars and a few flavor words.
  3. Roasting Guides — in Equipment, read the basics, the first-roast walkthrough, and the guide for your machine. Cup tasting off? The troubleshooter says what to change.
  4. “Discover more features” — when you're curious, tap this card on the main menu to see everything else without changing your mode.
After your 30-day trial: your data stays safe and RoastSource keeps working for free, with room for 7 active beans, 15 saved roasts, 15 ratings, 2 blend recipes, and 3 storage bins. Java Geek, Brewing, Quick Roast logging, the roast timer, the vendor directory, the equipment database, and data export stay free. Adaptive Roast, the Roast Quality Score, roast insights, SCA cupping, reports, and blend versions need RoastSource Home — $19.99 once, not a subscription.

What Is RoastSource?

RoastSource is a Progressive Web App (PWA) built for home coffee roasters. It works on any device with a browser — phone, tablet, or desktop — and opens even without a connection. On a computer, Chrome or Edge can install it as its own app; in Safari, use Add to Home Screen (iPhone, iPad) or Add to Dock (Mac). RoastSource helps you track your green coffee inventory, log roast sessions with real-time temperature profiling, score your roasts using SCA cupping protocols, explore brewing methods, create custom blends, research equipment, and dive deep into coffee science and origins.

Whether you are roasting your first batch on a popcorn popper or dialing in profiles on a Bullet R1, RoastSource gives you the tools to improve consistently and enjoy the journey.

Module Overview

🫘 Green Coffee Inventory

Track your entire bean collection. Vendor auto-detection recognizes Sweet Maria's, Happy Mug, Bodhi Leaf, and others — bulk import a whole order in one paste. Search, filter, and track freshness across origins, processes, and vendors.

🔥 Roasting

Your roast-day command center. Adaptive profiles tuned to your roaster, roast level, batch size, ambient temperature, and line voltage. Edit or delete saved roasts and browse a date-grouped history. In Journey and Science, every roast earns a 100-point Roast Quality Score, and a live drop window counts down after first crack. Profile import from Artisan (.alog) and CSV is coming soon — imports will live in their own tab so they never mix with your roast log.

⚗️ Blending

Create custom blends and explore 250+ preset blends. Blending Fundamentals teaches post-roast vs. pre-blend roasting. "Your First Blend" walks you through step by step.

⭐ Ratings & Cupping

Full SCA 100-point cupping protocol with predicted scores, spider charts, and an 8-category flavor intensity wheel. Or skip ahead with a Brief 100-point rating — both feed the same history. Roaster-type weight loss reference compares air, drum, hybrid, and DIY across all 7 roast levels.

☕ Brewing

Brew calculators and method guides for seven brew methods with ratios, grind size, temperature, and timing. Taste Calibration diagnoses extraction issues. Roast-level adjustments per method.

⚙️ Roasting Equipment

Roasting Guides for your own machine, 16+ roaster deep dives, and 40+ home roaster models across air, drum, hybrid, and DIY/home-built categories. Fresh Roast ecosystem with the Razzo V5T guide. Temperature probe setup lives in Settings — set it up once and your probe is auto-selected on every roast.

🌍 Java Geek

Your coffee education hub. 49 coffee-growing countries on an interactive world map, including the Middle East and Pacific Islands. Practical "Getting There on Your Roaster" guidance, roast troubleshooting, tasting and sensory basics, and the coffee personality quiz.

📊 Reports

See your roasting story in one place. Overview, Roast Next, Quality, Ratings, Inventory, Cost, Curves (Science), and Export tabs — with a Data Quality report and print buttons. The Overview and CSV export are free; the rest is part of Home. Craft shows Overview, Roast Next, and Inventory.

⚙️ Settings

Configure your experience. Pick your display mode, set up your roaster and temperature probes, back up your data, and enter your license key. Calibrate probe offsets for accurate readings.

Pick Your View — Three Roasting Modes

Home roasters don't all roast the same way. RoastSource lets you pick how much you see during a roast and switch any time from Settings. Your beans, history, ratings, and blends stay the same — only the view changes.

🔥 Craft

“I roast by smell, sight, and sound. I want to enjoy it, not stare at the app.”

You lead with your senses. The app follows. A clean screen that doesn't compete with the roaster, a milestone tap that doesn't break your rhythm, a simple “did I like it?” rating when the cup's ready — and every roast you've ever loved, findable again in one tap.

📖 Journey Default

“I know what I should do. I want to get better at knowing how to do it.”

You know the milestones but want the roadmap between them. Journey mode gives you a suggested path you can learn from, a clear picture of what changed between one roast and the next, and plain-language answers when a number leaves you wondering what it meant.

🔬 Science

“I have tried-and-true recipes. Give me every data point and let me run the roast my way.”

You treat every batch as an experiment. Science mode puts every live metric on screen, runs your own recipes prompt by prompt, and gives you real comparisons after the roast — control, not suggestions dressed up as decisions. And soon, it will import what you've built in Artisan.

Not sure which to pick? New to roasting, or roast by feel? Start in Craft (see the quick start at the top of this page). Want to learn what the numbers mean? Pick Journey — enough detail to learn from every batch, not so much that it gets in the way. Drop into Science when you want to dig in. Your data carries across every mode.

What Each Mode Includes

Every mode includes Inventory, Roasting, Brewing, Java Geek, Reports, Settings, and Help. Blending is the one module Journey adds over Craft. The table below shows where modes differ.

Creating & Using Your Own Roast Recipes

Adaptive profiles are a starting point, not a requirement. If you've already dialed in a roast that works, RoastSource treats your recipe as the source of truth — enter it, save it, run it, tweak it, and reuse it across every session. You shouldn't have to re-enter years of data just to use the app.

Creating & saving recipes

  • ● Enter your own heat, fan, and time settings as a named roast recipe — your personal profile library
  • ● Save any roast from your history as a reusable recipe in one tap
  • ● Organize by bean, roast level, or your own names — “Ethiopia City+” or “Monday morning espresso”
  • ● Edit any saved recipe and keep older versions if you want to compare

Running & importing

  • ● Start a roast from any saved recipe — the app prompts you through your own heat/fan/time plan during the live roast
  • ● Tweak on the fly — adjust a setting mid-roast and the deviation is logged against your baseline so you can see what you actually did
  • ● Coming soon: import profiles from Artisan (.alog) and CSV — they'll land in a separate tab so imports never mix with your native roast log
  • ● Recipes are scoped per roaster — each roaster keeps its own recipe list, so a plan tuned for one machine never silently applies to another

Getting Started in 4 Steps

1

Add Your Beans

Open Inventory and add your green coffee beans manually or import from a vendor receipt (Sweet Maria's, Happy Mug, Burman, Coffee Shrub, and more).

2

Set Up Your Roaster

Go to Settings > My Roasting Equipment and add your roaster with brand, model, batch capacity, and probe info. This enables adaptive profiling.

3

Roast & Log

Open Roasting, select a bean from inventory, and start logging your roast — or import a prior roast (Artisan .alog & CSV — coming soon). Mark first crack and end roast.

4

Rate & Compare

After roasting and brewing, use Ratings to cup your coffee with a Brief 100-point score or full SCA protocol. Compare results over time.

Sync & Backup

RoastSource stores all data locally in your browser by default. This means your data lives on the device you are using — it is not automatically saved to the cloud. If your browser cache is cleared, or you switch devices, your data may be lost unless you have a backup.

Local Folder Backup

On your current computer: Tap Sync in the header to open Sync & Backup (also under Settings > Data & Backup) and choose a local folder to save your RoastSource data (Chrome or Edge). On any browser, Save File downloads a full backup. This creates a backup file you can restore from at any time. We recommend backing up regularly — especially after roast sessions or big inventory changes.

Use your own cloud: On a computer with Chrome or Edge, choose a cloud-synced folder such as Dropbox, Google Drive, or iCloud Drive as your backup location, and the copy leaves your computer too. On iPhone and iPad, use Save File and keep the backup in Files or iCloud Drive.

Help staying backed up: the home menu reminds you when it's been a while since your last backup, Compress backup files makes each file about a tenth of the size, and Settings > Data & Backup > Storage on this device shows how much room your data takes. On iPhone and iPad especially, save a backup file regularly.

Sync is optional, and the backup file is plain data — it isn't encrypted, so keep it somewhere you trust.

⚠️ Important: RoastSource data is stored in your browser's local storage. If you clear your browser data, use private/incognito mode, or reset your device, your data will be lost. Always keep a backup — a synced folder or a saved backup file. Backing up takes seconds and protects hours of roasting logs, ratings, and inventory.
